How to Snag Gems in Heroes of History (Without Emptying Your Real-Life Wallet!) ?

Hey everybody! Grab a snack, pull up a chair, and let’s talk about the absolute bane and joy of our collective existence: Gems in Heroes of History.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably sat staring at your screen at 2:00 AM, realizing you are exactly 50 gems short of unlocking Joan of Arc. (And yes, I need her. My current front line is basically just Julius Caesar and a very confused-looking blacksmith).

Last week, I had a minor tragedy. My cat, Sir Waffles, headbutted my elbow right as I was tapping my screen, and I accidentally spent 300 gems speeding up a wheat harvest. A WHEAT HARVEST. I almost cried.

So, out of pure, unfiltered desperation to rebuild my stash, I’ve become somewhat of a gem-hoarding dragon. I’m completely free-to-play (mostly because I spend my actual money on iced coffee), so I had to get creative.

Here are my personal, tried-and-true, absolutely foolproof (unless you have a cat) tips for getting free gems in Heroes of History.

1. The "Morning Coffee" Routine (A.K.A. Don't Ignore Your Dailies)

Okay, I know. This sounds obvious. But you would be shocked at how many people just skip the daily tasks because they want to jump straight into the campaign battles.

Stop doing that!

I have a routine: I brew my coffee, sit on the couch, and just mindlessly tap through the daily checklists. Upgrading one building, training ten troops, helping an alliance member... it takes literally 4 minutes. I timed it. Completing the daily bar guarantees you that sweet, sweet gem chest at the end. It’s like getting paid to brush your teeth. Just do it!

2. Become a Nosey Neighbor on the World Map

This is my favorite quirky little trick. The World Map isn’t just for attacking bandit camps or staring menacingly at other players' bases.

Have you noticed those random little sparkly trees, weirdly placed rocks, or abandoned carts on the edge of the fog of war? Tap them. Seriously, tap everything. Be the nosiest ruler in history. I’d say about 1 in 5 of these hidden little map elements spits out a random prize, and a lot of times, it’s a handful of gems. It’s not a fortune, but finding 15 gems under a bush feels like finding a five-dollar bill in your winter coat.

3. Ride the Coattails of a Good Alliance

Story time: When I first started playing, I joined an alliance called "Killers007." It sounded cool. It was not cool. It was a ghost town. Nobody talked, nobody helped, and nobody did the Alliance Bosses.

I left and joined "HistoryNerds42," and oh my gosh, it changed my life.

When your alliance members buy things, or when your alliance defeats a big boss, everyone gets a chest. Waking up to 15 alliance gifts in my inbox—half of them containing gems—is the best feeling ever. If your alliance chat hasn't had a message in three days, pack your bags and move! Find a chatty, active group. Plus, it’s just more fun to complain about the drop rates with friends.

4. Treat the Achievement Tab Like a Savings Account

I have a weird habit. I absolutely refuse to claim my Achievement rewards (the little trophy icon) until I actually need the gems for something specific.

Every time you hit a milestone—like "Defeat 1,000 Pikemen" or "Upgrade your Town Hall to Level 15"—you get a chunky gem reward. If you claim them immediately, they just sit in your total, staring at you, tempting you to spend them on skipping a 2-hour build time. (Don't do it!).

I let those notification bubbles pile up. Right now, I have a red "12" sitting on my achievements tab, and it is taking every ounce of my willpower not to click it. But I know that when the next limited-time Hero Event drops, I’ll have a secret stash of like 1,500 gems just waiting for me.

5. Play the Historical Mashup Events!

Heroes of History loves doing those weird weekend events. You know the ones—where somehow Abraham Lincoln and Genghis Khan are teaming up to fight barbarians?

These events are the absolute best place to farm gems. Even if you don’t think you have a strong enough army to finish the whole event, just play the first few tiers. The early reward tiers of weekend events almost always dump gems, speedups, and hero shards into your lap for practically zero effort. I usually play them while I'm waiting for my pasta water to boil.

Alright, those are my big secrets! It’s nothing game-breaking, just a lot of patience, a lot of tapping on bushes, and keeping my cat away from my iPad when the game is open.

Are you guys saving up for any specific heroes right now? Or do you have any weird gem-farming tricks I missed? Drop them in the comments below because I am still trying to recover from the Great Wheat Tragedy of 2023.

Happy gaming, friends! ??
