CFB 27 Schedule Strategy: Building a Schedule That Maximizes Playoff Chances

Schedule construction is one of the most underappreciated strategic elements in CFB 27 Dynasty Mode. Your schedule determines your path to the College Football Playoff — too weak and the committee penalizes you; too strong and you accumulate losses. This guide covers how to build a schedule that maximizes your playoff chances.

Non-Conference Strategy

Your non-conference schedule should contain one marquee game (a Power Four opponent, ideally ranked), one solid mid-tier game (a Group of Five opponent that will win games but not threaten you), and one or two "guarantee games" (clearly inferior opponents). This mix gives you a resume-building win opportunity, a respectable strength of schedule, and manageable games that should be comfortable victories.

In CFB 27, avoid scheduling more than one elite non-conference opponent per season. A schedule with two or three top-10 non-conference games is a recipe for an 8-4 season. One marquee matchup, win it, and let your conference schedule provide the rest of your resume — that is the formula for playoff contention.

Strength of Schedule

The playoff committee (simulated in dynasty mode) values strength of schedule, but not as much as wins. An 11-1 record against the 40th-ranked schedule will generally be ranked ahead of a 9-3 record against the 5th-ranked schedule. Prioritize wins over schedule difficulty — but do not schedule so softly that the committee questions whether you have played anyone.

Bye Week Placement

Bye weeks have strategic value beyond rest. Place your bye week before your toughest conference game to give your team extra preparation time. Alternatively, place it mid-season to break up a grueling stretch of consecutive games. Avoid placing your bye in Week 1 (wasted, everyone is fresh) or Week 14 (the season is essentially over).
